Boat Demo Announcement

Unfortunately the only boats we can guarantee on Thursday and Friday are the Tiges (wake9 Z3 and 24Ve, new Z3, new R20, new RZ2) and Supreme V226s. The Centurions were coming from Mello Marine, and Mike Mello has suffered a tragedy and our hearts and prayers go out to his family. Centuirion tried hard to find us something else. Supra and MB are both still trying, but every boat is spoken for, Sanger also.

The good news is that the problems all were facing the last 2 years seem to be really turning around, every manufacturer I have talked to seems to be running at capacity to meet demand, good for everyone.

I won't be charging anyone their boat demo fee, but if you still plan on coming please register or email me. Also, please know that I have done my damnedest to get the boats we do have there, along with CMS. This time of year and now with the demand coming back is just making it tough.

That said, I have been contacted by so many non-competitors that are coming to just hang out and surf and enjoy the fun and I am very excited, its going to be a fun time. Looking forward to seeing everyone that is coming. We have some cool things planned for the tow boat and the broadcast, can't wait to share...

Stay Tuned!

Make sure you stay tuned to wakesurfopen.com and our social channels. We will be sending out updates and broadcasting right from the home page.

[Update: here is a link to the entire set of images on flickr - http://www.flickr.com/photos/wake9/s...7629369308156/ ]

So start with the goofy side, same setup as the beginning of this thread, but a couple more people. However, I was NOT in the boat. I was in the chase pontoon with the Canon 60D.

This isn't a surf pic, but have to share this one of Dennis. You don't catch him smiling much, but I caught him here. He took of his wetsuit and then jumped in the water to "relieve himself". I asked if he was feeling any better since he was sick and he said he still had a sore throat. I suggest that might be because his nuts were probably in there now. ;-)

So Rob and Jannelle Harrington were out with us, and Jannelle is one of my new Wakesurf guinea pigs. There is a bit of a story behind that, I will summarize. ;-) When we went to Texas to help with the Z3 testing and prototype we very much stressed adjustability and the transition. Jannelle rides a skim board and is not a newb, but not an expert either and she is more sensitive to a wake that is too steep or has an abrupt transition. You can watch her riding on video especially and you can really see the benefits or weaknesses of a wake. She rode our 24Ve at the last polar bear event and loved it, wanted to take it home. She rode the 2012 Tige RZ4 the next week and struggled holding her edge on the steeper wake. The Z3 was engineered to be more adjustable and to have a nice transition. Here is a good shot of her and you can see the transition pretty well. She enjoyed the wake a lot. Can't wait to get her out when its warmer. It was VERY cold, air temp of 52-58 at best and water temp of low 50s.

Couple good pics of RJ.

Good picture of the length from the side.

This one is a good shot of the height, its very difficult to get a good shot from the side that shows the height. The Z3 makes a much larger hole than the other boats we have had and so you have to be right up next to the boat to see it. But RJ is down in the trough to get speed for an air so it shows it.

This is a great picture of the crew in the boat, but also shows how well the board storage on the Z3 works even with thicker boards and arch bar style traction.

Moving on to the regular side... I am skipping Dennis for now, but you can see some great pics on flickr. Dennis was sick and didn't ride as much.

Rob Harrington had a blast on his TWP, he kept whooping and hollering, so I am pretty sure he enjoyed the ride. I think there was even a few YeeHahs thrown out.

Now on to mitch. At first, the wake was not right. We don't have our plug and play custom sacs yet, so we are still manually filling a few sacs and we figured out later that we screwed up in the rear locker and so didn't have all the weight on that side right. It was too cold and windy to take it out and redo it, so we made do. But about halfway through mitch's run we moved enough people around and stuff and it wasn't great, but very good, and he really liked it, as he said above. He kept talking about the lip.

Ok, so this is a bit off topic, but when I saw this shot, and mitch's form fitting wetsuit and girlish figure, I thought to myself, we gotta do everything we can to keep this boy out of prison.

Ok, so here are the shots that show him enjoying the lip. I haven't seen mitch get air like this before.

Check out this solid indy grab.

Mitchy the kid is launchin.

Speaking of launching... Chris Wolter had the worst conditions. The wind got bad, and that problem in the rear locker was the worst and we were almost going to just come in, but let him ride. He had a great attitude and made the most of it. The wake was short and steep and just not right during his session, but he still launched. The first big air he did, several of us stood up, it was that big.

Nose bleed warning. Keep in mind, low 50s in the air and water, full wetsuit and booties and substandard wake and wind.

Now on to my buddy Frank. Like Frank said, he is 310 lbs and the boat has got to have push for him. Since the wake was messed up for Chris, I got in the boat from the pontoon to make it better for Frank. Something happened that I have not seen yet. Frank has surfed on every one of our boats. On every one we have to turn the taps up higher to like 6 and slow down the boat to 10.6 mph or so to steepen the wake for lots of push. Works great but shortens it up a bit. Frank rode at 11.2 and taps at 4. RJ rides 11.4 and taps at 4. Frank also rode longer and more comfortably than I have seen him ride before. You can see in this picture, the rubrail is a few inches off the water, just like with everybody else.

It was a great day and lots more pictures in our flickr feed. I can't wait to get the regular guys out again when we have our custom sacs and its warmer. The Z3 is still exceeding our expectations, especially pushing frank with the same setup as RJ. We also really got a chance to test the list angles and see that when you list this boat over to 10+ degrees the wake goes out of shape. It wants that magic 8 degrees or so of list only.

Way too much fun.

Here is the larger entire flickr set slide show:
YOU try that with 4 inch fins on a surf board! Very cool and hopefully he can add that into his competition runs. Would be amazing to see that in a MyWake run!
NOTE: James gets excited and throws out an expletive at the end, but I gotta be honest, if my 10 year old landed something like that and threw out a big "Holy Sh*t!" I wouldn't even flinch. ;-)

One of my heroes died today. Its probably been a pretty trendy thing to call Steve Jobs a hero, however, I have said that since the late 80s. I am a geek, through and through. My day job is software development. I own my own small software development firm that I started in 1999 and I have been programming since Jr High School. In 1986 as a Junior in high school I received a settlement from a car accident and was going to use part of the money to buy my own computer. This would allow me to program and experiment at home, not just with class computers. I did my research and tried out many computers. My programming teacher thought I should get a Tandy but he had 2 small Macintosh computers in the back of the class. I played with them and just couldn't believe how different, unique. A completely different approach to computing. My teacher thought I was nuts, but I wanted a Mac.

So I went to my local Mac computer store where I lived in Simi Valley, California and priced out a Macintosh Plus. This thing had 2 floppies, a scsi port, and 1 meg of RAM. That's right, a FULL MEGABYTE of ram. That was 4x the ram of most PCs back then and 8 times the RAM of the 128k Macs at school. Computer and printer was going to cost me $5k. I bought it and fell in love with the Mac and Apple. A Macintosh has been my primary desktop computer ever since then. I took that computer apart and put it back together several times to fulfill my curiosities and learn how it worked. I read about Steve Jobs and Steve Wosniak and how the Mac was created and Apple was formed. It inspired me to be excellent and always push to do things the best I can. Steve Jobs seemed to me to be a modern day Thomas Edison even back then.

In the 90s I was working and moving up in the companies I worked for and always found ways to inject technology in what I did and give me a step up on the next guy. I always felt that using the Mac, where most used PCs was also a benefit. In the years before I started my own company I used Macs more and more in what I did and actually made the trek to San Francisco once a year to MacWorld and watch the keynote from the Apple CEO. The first one I went to was with John Scully as the CEO. I still loved Apple during those days, but it wasn't the same. The passion wasn't there. The focus was the bottom line, all business, no passion. I stuck threw even when Macs started to get horrible. Do you remember System 7.5.3? Crashed constantly. Even I was losing faith. Then Gil Amelio came to Apple. He didn't have the passion, but he seemed to want to get back what made Apple great. I went to the keynotes in SF, he was boring and dry, but seemed he might be able to fix the mess. He started to get the operating system back to something useable, and was looking for a fresh OS. Then I heard he was looking at NEXT from Jobs, and BeOS from Gasse, both former Apple guys. I thought, wow, what if Jobs came back? Many people don't give Amelio much credit. I give him a ton. He steered the ship back in the right direction even if he didn't' have what it took to Captain it from there.

I was actually there at the MacWorld when Amelio announced the purchase of NEXT, and brought Jobs on stage and announced he would be back as a consultant. It was exciting to see. I think that was the same MacWorld that was also the 20th anniversary of the Mac and they created a special 20th anniversary Mac for Jobs and Wosniak. Seeing them both on stage together was cool. You could tell Steve Jobs didn't seem to care for the 20th Anniv. Mac design. It was gaudy, form over function. The exact opposite of Jobs minimalism.

It wasn't long before Steve took on interim CEO. I was a bit disappointed that he axed the Newton. Yes, I actually carried around a Newton and used it. Loved it. The Newton was way ahead of its time. I hoped that someday it would be back, better, something from Steve. Little did I know the iPhone would replace it, and blow the doors off the Newton.

After Steve became iCEO Apple announced a public event that would lay out his plan for the company. This was in 1997 I believe. Normally at this period all huge announcements were done at one of the MacWorld conventions, but this was being done off that track. This was when you could actually be just anybody and get into a Jobs keynote, or a public event. He wasn't the rock star like he has been lately. I registered and drove with my oldest daughter Ashley all the way from Simi Valley to Cupertino to hear how Steve was going to bring Apple back to life. I told my daughter, "This is like going to see Thomas Edison speak. Someday you will understand that." She didn't get it, but I am sure she does now. We even bought T-Shirts. The shirt had a Cookie, a Screwdriver and a Shopping cart on it. Still have it. Anyway, he laid out his plan and I couldn't wait for how it was going to unfold.

I went to a few more MacWorlds. Every year the keynote line got longer and longer. I saw Steve unveil the first iMacs, another generation of iMacs. The G3 Workstations and several other products. After that, the keynotes were not accessible, but I watched all of the live streams from home. I have had too many Macs to count, and have used every version of every OS since the Mac Plus with version 5 or something in that range. I have iPods from the past like legos and I carry my iPhone 4 and iPad 2 everywhere I go. They help me be on the lake and still manage my business and wake9.

All that to say, Steve was one of my heroes and I am going to miss following his moves and watching his keynotes. Steve made a lot of money, but that was not his goal, he just wanted to leave his mark, he wanted to make great products and be known for excellence. I hope with my kids and those that know me closely that I can pass on that kind of passion for the things I love, and the things I do.

Steve has had many quotes, but here are 2 of my favorites:

1. Angie Viland. Angie and her husband Mike came to our 2nd Polar Bear event and really got stoked about wakesurfing. She decided to try a contest at the West Coast Open. She was so scared. She came up to me at the open and her knees were literally shaking. I told her just to relax and have fun and she did great. Now she is at worlds and she gets on the podium!?
2. Chase Hazen. Chase is a great friend of wake9 and we love him. Its not just cause he surf's incredibly, he is just a great kid. Seriously, I would adopt this kid. The WWSC Championship has eluded him til now, and so we were quietly rooting for him. Great job Chase, we are all proud.
Lot of other friends of wake9 did well, but I really wanted to point out these 2. Great job to all.

The black and green one used in Tige's promo material is on its way, here in a week or so. I can't contain myself. RJ and I keep pinching each other. Check out this video of Tige Boats for 2012, and notice that black and green Z3, especially the metal flake in that Green. I have to give credit to Danny at Tige. Since he has been designing, the boats have just taken on a flare and style that is incredible. A good combination of Tige innovation along with industry standards, you gotta love it. Take a look at the video:
It says $56,500. This thing has an amazing wake, and a $6k new stereo from Liquid Trends/Exile. I yell to Grant, "What are you thinking/smoking?" He says he needs to sell it for new inventory. This is a great deal, and even though its a demo boat, CMS is meticulous with their boats, it looks brand new. So I took some pictures with my iPhone, and if you want a great surf boat, call Grant at CMS.

So I happened to visit my old youtube account, that I had posted a few videos on before wake9 was around. And I ran across this video we did, in I think 2007. This was when Amy insisted the kids still wear helmets. RJ rode his beloved Inland Surfer Green Loogey. The iPhone was a cool gadget, not the norm. The iPhone didn't even have a video camera, but I think I jail broke my phone and had this cool little app on it, I don't remember. It basically took many stills and made a video from it, and recorded sound. The thing I love about this video the most is how NUTS we all went when RJ got it. Good times. The whole reason we do all this stuff is for the memories.

So we have some great podcasts in the can that we are finishing up, but in the meantime, I wanted to rock your wake with a few REALLY cool videos. We love putting together the stuff we do, but we like to keep our stuff close to home. Fun, family made, on a budget, but with good info and lots of fun. We try to use equipment than any family could buy and film themselves. We use Final Cut Studio which is very expensive, but you could do what we do with something like iMovie, or Final Cut Express.

All that said, we love watching some of the stuff others do, and spend the time and money for multiple camera angles, incredible equipment, the whole nine yards. Here is a video by Merret Fay that has some great production value, but more important, some kick butt surfing by World Champ Keenan Flegal. Great vid, great surfing. Keep up the great work.

Here is something that Chase Hazen sent me, done by Slayshtank. Slayshtank is constantly doing great videos that RJ and I watch and enjoy all the time. This video was done by Blake Rabe and I love it. It not only has the great production value and incredible surfing by Chase Hazen and Dominic Lagaci, but it also has some really cool equipment I love to geek out on and the use of our favorite boat, the Tige RZ2. Great job everyone!
OK, serious, how much for that copter? Right?

Here is another, this one is great because DJ Jamez sends me updates frequently about his surfing and tricks he is working on. He sent me this video and wow, he is nailing these tricks over and over, and I can't wait to see the guy land that superman. If you aren't familiar with DJ Jamez, the thing that makes him special is his great surfing and his crazy boat setup. This guy puts his boat on the edge of sinking each time he goes out. Not something I would want to do, but someone has to push the envelope, right?
Anyway, we love watching these videos, and I hope you enjoy them also. If you know of any other really cool vids that you think might rock my wake, send me a line.

Stay tune for my next blog post, I will be detailing some of our camera equipment and work flow process.

The latest wakesurf edit from slayshTank and The Riders Coalition features the handy work of Blake Rabe with a little help from AirCam.co and the heli shred-cam. This video features a new look to the progression of wakesurfing and the riding of Liquid Force Team Rider Dominic Lagace and Shred Stixx Rider Chase Hazen. It was a fun filled weekend, that got a lot of work accomplished in showing the progression of the sport, and what top notch riders can really throw down.

I have to admit, the weather always gets me nervous. It actually snowed here on Sunday, can you believe it? But it did that last year, and the weather man says the weather is going to be good, check for yourself by clicking the banner below and checking the forecast. So far shows in the 70s, and it has been improving. Cool.

We have over 40 riders signed up for the contest, and the clinic is full, YAY! We expect more registrations and a few on site. Supreme has prepared the boats, and we are ready to go.

If you are not in the contest, but in the area, SHOW UP! We would love to meet you, there is plenty of nice beach to watch the event, and we will have a large 50" inch screen with a feed from the boats. There will be a pro shop setup by CMS with lots of great stuff, and a bunch of boards from CMS and sponsors. BE THERE!

Speaking of feeds from the boat, RJ and I have been working hard on this, and constantly begging mama wake9 for more money to get everything we need to do a successful grass roots broadcast over Ustream for this event. Here is a little video we did the other day, right after we tested all of our new equipment.

Man, we are really excited about the broadcast this year, we think have got it right, and have nailed the issues that have plagued us last year. Here is where you will want to go, to see the stream. Of course, you can also come here and find links to it:

Click Here for Live West Coast Open stream page.

Lastly, special thanks to all of the sponsors for this years event. We love the wakesurf community and all of these companies are great ambassadors for the wakesurf community. Be sure to show your love for them supporting local events, and give their products a look over.

What a BLAST! We finally got the gopro 3D setup all working and tested, and a good day of sunshine, and the R&D crew together. Dennis, Frank and Chris Wolter, and the rest of the wake9 crew. Tons of fun. See if you can see the butterfly in 3D when Dennis is riding the flyboy. We still have to work out some bugs, like titles and stuff, but its just going to get better. Tons of fun. The best way to view if you don't have a 3D monitor (who does?) is to set to Red/Cyan Anaglyph mode and use some 3D glasses. If you don't have any, try the ones linked below the video.

Apologies to Chris Wolter, he KILLED it out there with a Air Reverse 180 and several 360s on the lip along with some killer airs. The camera didn't record during his run, so sorry Chris.

NOTE: Watching embedded 3D isn't working right, just click the YOUTUBE logo in lower right of video to watch on youtube page in 3D.
